One of the delights of life is eating with friends; second to that is talking about eating. And, for an unsurpassed double whammy, there is talking about eating while you are eating with friends.
I recently heard of Laurie Colwin through Leite Culinaria's feature of Katherine Hepburn's Brownies (which rock, by the way). Home Cooking is a lovely little collection of essays that first appeared in Gourmet magazine. Colwin's writing is warm and unpretentious, but not as polished as that of MFK Fisher or Elizabeth David. Indeed, her essays reminded me of blog posts - only written in the 1980's, with their heightened awareness of fat. Still, I will definitely pick up the sequel and maybe even some of her novels.
