February: short but busy

February was a big month for the boys. Nikita got to show off his telemarking skills at his school ski trip. We made sure he could put on the skis by himself beforehand, but he still needed help at the slope. He also performed well at his piano recital, and the next day, tied for first place at a small piano competition! Here he is, playing "A Little Flower" by Cornelius Gurlitt:

Ivan also did fine at the piano recital despite freezing over a mistake. He also started participating at a chess club on Sundays (along with Nikita), and getting the hang of cross-country skiing.

Enjoying the snow.

I tried a number of new things at the beginning of the spring semester: a writing class at a biotech term, Google Docs to make office hours more meaningful (students actually show up!), and a fitness challenge at MIT. I easily completed weekly fitness time goals by shoveling snow and breaking ice on the stairs. Indeed, the month was quite cold. At one point, one of my officemates asked, "Who turned off the heat - outside?" But NPR's music playlist and videos of crowboarding helped keep things in perspective.

Back at home, I finally finished the baby blanket, and christened our new range by making Bo Ssam and seasoning my stovetop waffle iron. Thanks to this playlist of swoon-worthy readings, I learned of this fabulous production of North and South and tore through the book. Finally, I saw some great performances: Lake Street Dive on The Colbert Report; Brian Williams on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon; Bruno Mars at the Super Bowl; and the Russian police choir at the Olympics opening ceremony.
