Battle of the Sexes

One of the classes I teach this term meets Monday evenings from 7-9 pm. The meeting time bites (yes, I still go home to feed Nikita dinner!), but at least the class is lively. Last night, I started an exercise on how to write a descriptive paragraph on a figure. This is the data I used:
I first had them make a list of observations, then conclusions from the observations. Since the paragraph will be written in class, I had them vote on the conclusion we would make. These conclusions particularly excited the students:

Men are still faster than women.
With time, women will catch up with and exceed men.

One student actually did a linear regression analysis of the data, and concluded it would take 60 years for women to catch up with men!
