Had my 15-week appointment today. After having two miscarriages within the past year, I'm still don't quite believe that I'm pregnant. So, it was gratifying to hear the heartrate at the doctor's office.
Last weekend was quite busy. My parents came up to visit, just for a night. They enjoyed Nikita's music class on Saturday - I think the teacher unjustifiably favors him (e.g., picking him up and kissing him when he's misbehaved) - and Taiwanese dim sum afterwards. The dim sum happened at Chun Shing Yuan in Newton; people (mostly Chinese) line up in front of the doors in anticipation of the 11.30 opening no matter what the weather because the restaurant is small, and the food is freshest at the first seating. I particularly liked the 5-spice beef sandwich, spicy and sour cabbage salad, turnip cake, and Taiwanese pork noodle soup. Wasn't too crazy about the spare ribs, chitlins, or fried dough.
On Sunday, we dropped off Galina and Nikita at the open house of the Boston Symphony Orchestra while Igor and I checked out the open house of a German International School. Igor and I have resumed our search for schools for Nikita. We were freaked out last Thursday by the math demonstration lesson at another private school: the question was how to represent 24 hours in a pie chart, and the teacher when through a whole elaboration of dividing up the circle into halves, then quarters, etc. The demonstration suggested by the 5th grade, students didn't know how to divide 360 by 24! The German school seemed more normal math-wise, but it's frustrating to think that we'd have to resort to a German curriculum so that Nikita will learn the basics of reading, writing, and math.
