Ways I've been working off insomnia (besides blogging)
- Working on my class book page for Stanford 15 year reunion. I must admit, thinking about college, as opposed to high school, gives me mixed feelings. As much as I love Stanford (now), the first two years were really tough - no happy "frosh year experience" for me. I don't think I came into my own until the second half of college.
- Knitting a BSJ while listening to How to Read and Understand Poetry. I don't get as much knitting done as I'd like because I'm taking notes while listening to the tape - and the (mechanical) quality of the tape is terrible. I just realized that the notes that come with the tape are rather extensive, so I might just listen to the tapes as background. Or pick up the audio version of Robert Fagles's translation of The Iliad instead.
- Reading a story from The Essential Tales of Chekhov. I don't know how I got an English degree without reading a short story from Chekhov. I got this book as well as The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel, and Chekhov is vastly superior. Hempel uses language nicely, but Chekhov actually tells a story. Am I getting traditional in my old age? I'm tempted to buy the recently reissued Tales of Chekhov - all 13 volumes - but would first like to compare Garnett's translation with that of Pevear and Volokhonsky.
- Having warm milk with either a banana or a cookie (oatmeal-cranberry-pecan tonight). I definitely didn't have midnight snacks when I was pregnant with Nikita!
